Synopsis

July 1st, 1916 is remembered as the day the brightest and best of a generation were virtually wiped out on a field of battle along the river Somme in France. From every bay and cove and city street, from fishing stage to merchant's home, men had marched off to the Great War - proud members of their very own Newfoundland Regiment, never without the spirit and humour they brought from their homeland, and never suspecting what one terrible morning of treachery would bring. In the midst of of the turmoil of war were real people, much like the sons and fathers of any era. And beyond the trenches were lovers and mothers and others who held them dear. This powerful and moving play reveals why Newfoundland and Labrador holds to the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel with such force and why it will never be forgotten.
